whatever happens, happens.

My bro and I had this thing where, during most school holidays, we'd sit down and play Secret of Mana on the SNES, from start to finish. I don't know how many times we've finished that game, but it's one of those games that is just so well designed and thought through, it never gets old. We're about to embark on another such marathon.

We just got home from sitting around in KFC eating a very late dinner beneath unflattering fluro lights. Never of us had eaten for about 9 hours. Hunger is the best sauce, they say, and those chips hit the spot. Neither of us are fast food sit down eaters, but it'd be a long day, and neither of us had any sort of enthusiasm for cooking.

We'd left the hospital as Mum was being wheeled away for emergency surgery. It was one of those 'have this operation right now or die' situations.

Neither of us are particularly worried about her. Serious, yes, but uncomplicated. All the same, that's my Mum they're taking pieces out of. She was lying there telling me not to worry. The audacity of the woman, I swear. I imagine, when they call at some ungodly hour to tell us the results and exactly what on earth is going on, I shall feel less assured.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to leave interesting and distracting and amusing things in the comments. Anything you like. Anything I like too, for that matter.

*sends wishes for fast recovery and general everything turning out okay-ness*

My pitiful effort at interesting distractions: Most awesomest bookcases, I <3 these curtains, "wikihistory" - short story which made me smile.

Thoughts to you, small sailor.

I loved Secret of Mana... I played it *heaps* at uni... it may or may not be part of the reason i was at uni for ten years... me and my gf and our buddy used to pull all-nighters where we'd just sit up and play Secret of Mana or Lufia or Terranigma until dawn and eat junk food... good times!

I still walk along the road and get Secret of Mana flashbacks and have to stop and remember that wasn't my life, that was a game :-)

Hmmmm... something distracting, eh? Have you read Dresden Codak?

I hope all goes well with your Mum.

May you all (but especially your mother) get through it well.

In the meantime, think of the theme "Masques", think of CSFG, distract yourself by writing six short stories in two days for the next anthology. One story would do, I admit but six are more distracting.

I did you a highly distracting folk dance a moment ago, but you forgot to look. You might have to imagine it. I was almost, almost dancing to the music, too.

Been there done that with my own mom when she had a tumor excised - I hope your mum has a quick and uncomplicated and reasonably painless recovery!

Thanks for the thoughts and distractions, guys. Surgery went without complications. Now we just have to do the rest.

Secret of Mana!!! A barrage of sweet, sweet memories just burst upon my mind. I can't imagine a more magical time in my life, than as a boy playing Secret of Mana for the first time. I snatched up the soundtrack a while back and slipped it on my iPod, and sometimes I can still feel the same winter wonderland awe that dazzled me those years ago. If only I hadn't surrendered video games to books. But a few years back I came across an equally breath-taking experience: Ico. From the creators of the magnificent Shadow of the Colossal. Oh, and now I have to go and read 10 books to make up for my fond reminiscing about video games.
